Project Overview
The Columbia Residences, a 225 unit condominium residence complex with 16,000 square feet of retail space, including Trader Joe’s, is located on a 2.3 acre parcel of the former Columbia Hospital for Women. This is a premier downtown location with easy access to Rock Creek Park, Georgetown, George Washington University and the K Street corridor.
The central tower core of the original hospital (originally constructed in 1915) was retained and renovated, with new three underground levels of parking and 2 new nine story wings surrounding the renovated tower. Shalom Baranes Associates is the Architect for Trammel Crow Development on this historic landmark site.
The interior masonry for the project consisted of over 60,000 concrete masonry units (CMU) spread over the garage service areas, retail and penthouse spaces. The exterior façade for the new wings combine three different brick colors with unique mortar colors for each, and integrated cast stone bands, window and storefront surrounds, balcony/parapet copings and fascia panels. New infills and additions at the existing center tower required a 4th color brick and mortar, with the brick a custom size to match the existing construction. Extensive masonry site stair and ramp walls were also incorporated to access the differing entrance elevations between existing and new buildings, as well as the grade differences along this one block long building site. Over 600,000 brick and 3,400 pieces of cast stone were produced and installed by Calvert on this project.
